M. Brett Wilson is an Associate Professor of History and Public Policy at Central European University (CEU), holding dual appointments in the Department of Historical Studies and the Department of Public Policy. He is also a member of the Center for Religious Studies and the Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies. His research focuses on religious, intellectual, and cultural history with specialization in late Ottoman and modern Turkish contexts. Wilson holds a PhD in Religious Studies from Duke University, along with an MA and BA from Duke and the University of South Carolina respectively.
His major works include Translating the Qur’an in an Age of Nationalism (2014), which examines Qur’anic translation as a marker of Turkish modernization, and his edited translation of Yakup Kadri Karaosmanoğlu’s Nur Baba (2023), a seminal Ottoman novel critiquing Sufi practices. Current research explores the abolition of Sufi orders in the early Turkish Republic and their transformation into national heritage.
Wilson’s publications span topics such as Sufi traditions, nationalism, print culture, and Qur’anic exegesis. His work bridges Ottoman and modern Turkish history, emphasizing intersections between religion, state formation, and cultural identity. He teaches courses on modern Turkish political history, cultural heritage preservation, and Mediterranean historiography.
