M. Bahati Kuumba is an Associate Professor in the Comparative Women's Studies Department at Spelman College since 1987. She serves as the Associate Director of the Women’s Research and Resource Center.
Education:
- Ph.D. from Howard University
- M.A. and B.A. from the University of Oklahoma
Research Focus: Dr. Kuumba investigates transnational activism among African and African diasporic women, emphasizing social resistance movements, population policy, and global Black feminist theory and praxis. Her work integrates participatory research methodologies and popular education frameworks for collective action.
Publications: She has contributed extensively to journals like Sociological Forum, Mobilization, and Agenda – Empowered Women, and authored the book Gender and Social Movements (2001). Her scholarship challenges narratives that marginalize African women's counter-hegemonic resistance across borders.
Scientific Recognition:
- Fannie Lou Hamer Award (2005)
Global Collaborations: Dr. Kuumba collaborates with women’s organizations in the United States, Canada, Cuba, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Her guest lecture at the Women’s University in Africa highlighted transnational activism under the theme “Sisters in Struggle: Mapping African Women’s Transnational Activism.”
