Prof. Dr. M. (Mike) Huiskes is an Associate Professor at the University of Groningen, holding dual affiliations with the Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Medical Sciences. He specializes in Communication Studies and Linguistics, with a focus on Conversation Analysis, Multimodal Communication, and Health Communication. His research explores medical communication dynamics, surgical training supervision, and multilingual psychotherapy practices.
He coordinates undergraduate and graduate programs in Communication Studies and serves as an editor for the Tijdschrift voor Taalbeheersing. As a member of the LEARN Network at the UMCG, he investigates learning and teamwork in healthcare settings, particularly in operating theaters. His teaching spans courses on research methods, health communication, and dialogical leadership in medical contexts.
Key research themes include autonomy regulation in surgical training, therapeutic dialogue structures, and language choices in cross-cultural therapy. He has published widely on these topics, with recent work examining option-listing in medical consultations and silence-breaking techniques in psychotherapy.
