Dr. Lynsay Shepherd is a Reader in Cybersecurity and Human-Computer Interaction at Abertay University, working within the School of Design and Informatics. She holds a PhD in Usable Security, an MSc in Internet Computing, and a BSc (Hons) in Computing, along with a PGCert in Higher Education Teaching. She is an active researcher, educator, and supervisor, contributing significantly to cybersecurity and human factors research.
- PhD in Usable Security (Cybersecurity and Human-Computer Interaction)
- MSc in Internet Computing
- BSc (Hons) in Computing
- PGCert in Higher Education Teaching
Lynsay's research centers on the human dimensions of cybersecurity, particularly how individuals interact with technology in secure contexts. Her work integrates Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) with security, focusing on usable security, eye-tracking, serious games, extended reality (XR), and romance fraud detection using machine learning. She investigates how gamification, affective feedback, and immersive environments can enhance security awareness and user behavior.
Her recent publications highlight a strong trend in applying interactive technologies—such as VR and gamification—to cybersecurity education and fraud prevention. Themes include user engagement in training, behavioral analysis through eye-tracking, and leveraging machine learning for both phishing detection and tab management. Her research bridges technical innovation with psychological and educational principles to improve real-world security outcomes.
Dr. Shepherd has received recognition through research fellowships and memberships:
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA)
- SPRITE+ Expert Fellow
- Member of ACM and SIGCHI
She has secured competitive research funding as Principal Investigator from organizations including the NCSC, Police Scotland, Carnegie Trust, and the European Commission (Horizon 2020). She supervises PhD students and contributes to academic service through editorial roles, conference organization (including chairing Cyber Science 2018), and peer review for top-tier journals and conferences such as CHI, Computers & Security, and IEEE Cyber SA. Her outreach includes public lectures, media engagement, and participation in events like the SICSA Cybersecurity Christmas Lectures.
Lynsay leads and contributes to several research initiatives involving serious games for phishing awareness, eye-tracking labs, and immersive VR projects like HeartGuard VR for romance scam education. These efforts are often collaborative, involving interdisciplinary teams and international partners, such as OTH Regensburg’s Eye-tracking Laboratory. Her work is embedded in applied, socially impactful cybersecurity research aimed at empowering users and improving digital safety.
