Lynne E. Bernstein is a Professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at George Washington University. She holds a Ph.D. in Psycholinguistics from the University of Michigan and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Speech Perception and Psychoacoustics at Northwestern University. Her research focuses on the neural and behavioral bases of speech perception, multisensory processing, and perceptual learning, funded by the NSF and NIH.
- Expertise: Speech Perception, Lip Reading, Multisensory Processing, Perceptual Learning, Deafness, Computational Modeling
- Led the Communication Neuroscience Laboratory, investigating visual speech perception training for older adults and vibrotactile perceptual learning via sensory substitution devices
Her research combines neuroimaging (fMRI, EEG), computational modeling, and behavioral methods to study how speech is perceived through vision, hearing, and touch. Recent work includes developing training methods to improve speech perception in noisy environments and mapping neural pathways for lipreading and audiovisual speech processing. She has held leadership roles at institutions like the National Science Foundation and House Ear Institute.
Grants include NIH/NIDCD R56DC016107 (2018–2022) and NSF SBE/BCS-1439339 (2014–2019). Her lab collaborates with SeeHear LLC and Georgetown University on projects like 'Innatam' to optimize vibrotactile speech interfaces.
Notable contributions include demonstrating neural plasticity in congenitally deaf adults and advancing methodologies for speech perception training. Future work emphasizes improving clinical speech tests and understanding multisensory learning mechanisms.
