Lynne Brydon is a Senior Honorary Research Fellow at the Department of African Studies and Anthropology, University of Birmingham, where she has held key administrative roles, including Head of the School of History and Cultures and Director of DASA (formerly CWAS). She is actively involved in interdisciplinary research at the intersection of anthropology, African studies, and gender studies.
- Education: MA and PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Cambridge (Cantab).
- Leadership: Former Director of DASA (2007-08) and Head of School since 2008.
- International Engagement: Coordinated Higher Education Links with Ghana and Sierra Leone, shaping MA programs on gender issues.
Her research spans gender, family structures, migration, and development in Africa, with a focus on Ghana. She has conducted historicised ethnography of the Avatime people and explored contemporary debates on poverty and inequality.
Recent research trends include interdisciplinary approaches to African studies, ethnographic fieldwork, and analysis of development policies. Her work often bridges historical and modern contexts, addressing labor dynamics, civil society, and post-colonial challenges.
Lynne has received grants from the ESRC, British Academy, Nuffield Foundation, and University of Birmingham. She co-led a Nuffield-funded 'New Career Development Fellowship' (2003-08) on adult education in Ghana. Her publications include books on economic adjustment and gender in Africa.
She is the Treasurer of the African Studies Association of the UK and convened the 2011 Cadbury Fellows’ Workshop on Gender Inequalities in Africa.
