Lynn Waterhouse

Lynn Waterhouse is an Assistant Professor and Assistant Unit Leader in Fisheries at the Minnesota Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, University of Minnesota. Her research focuses on quantitative fisheries science, stock assessment, population dynamics of fishes, and statistical methods with applications to both marine and freshwater systems.

Dr. Waterhouse holds a Ph.D. in Biological Oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego; an M.S. in Statistics from Pennsylvania State University; an M.S. in Fisheries Science from Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences; and a B.S. in Biology from the University of Dayton. This interdisciplinary training forms the foundation of her research approach.

Her primary research interests include quantitative fisheries science, stock assessment methodologies, population dynamics modeling, and statistical approaches to solving real-world fisheries problems. She has conducted significant research on Nassau Grouper conservation in the Cayman Islands, steelhead movement and abundance estimation, and spatial fishing models, demonstrating expertise in both theoretical and applied statistical methods.

Dr. Waterhouse's publication record shows a progression from methodological advancements in fisheries science to more recent conservation-focused research with direct management implications. Her work on the recovery of Nassau Grouper following protective measures has been particularly influential, documenting how spatiotemporal closures can lead to population recovery when supported by rigorous monitoring.

She has previously taught Introduction to Marine and Island Ecology of The Bahamas through the John G. Shedd Aquarium, demonstrating her commitment to education and public outreach in marine conservation.
