Brice Semmens is a Professor in Marine Biology and Biological Oceanography at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego. He serves as Director of the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI), a long-term oceanographic and fisheries monitoring program. His research focuses on quantitative ecology, stable isotope analysis, and fisheries management, with particular emphasis on coral reef ecosystems, population dynamics, and conservation strategies.
Education: B.S., Texas A&M University; M.S., UCSB (Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management); Ph.D., University of Washington. His work integrates ecological modeling, field observations, and collaborative approaches to address challenges in marine resource management.
Research interests include stock assessment methodologies, larval fish ecology, and the application of novel technologies (e.g., AI-driven fisheries monitoring, eDNA sampling). Key contributions include developing the IsoBank isotopic data repository and advancing statistical tools like the cosimmr R package for stable isotope mixing models.
Recent articles highlight his focus on spatial management of sharks, environmental drivers of larval recruitment, and the socio-ecological impacts of marine protected areas. His work emphasizes bridging science with conservation policy, particularly regarding threatened species like Nassau grouper and white abalone.
