Professor Lynn Newton is a Professor in the School of Education at Durham University. She holds a PhD in Teachers’ Questioning for Understanding in Primary Science and has held leadership roles including Head of the School of Education and Programme Director for the Primary PGCE. Her academic career spans over four decades, with extensive experience in primary education, teacher training, and curriculum development.
Education Background: She earned a BA in Education from Durham University (1975), an MA in Education from Durham (1981), and a PhD from the University of Newcastle (topic: Teachers’ Questioning for Understanding in Primary Science). She has held visiting professorships at Nottingham Trent and Northumbria Universities.
Research Interests: Focus on creativity in education, teaching for understanding, questioning strategies in science, and STEM education. Key contributions include her book Creativity for a New Curriculum: 5-11 (Routledge, 2012) and monographs on productive thinking and questioning methodologies.
Awards & Esteem: Recipient of the 2013 San Francisco University Best Research Paper Award, Ofsted Best Practice Case Study (2009), and member of the Durham Commission on Creativity and Education (2019). She has presented globally at ICIE conferences and contributed to editorial boards of international journals.
