Lynn Bohs is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Utah, where she conducts research and teaches courses in plant systematics, evolution, and biodiversity. Her work is centered in the College of Science and focuses primarily on the Solanaceae (tomato) family, which includes economically important plants such as tomatoes, potatoes, eggplants, and chili peppers.
Dr. Bohs' research interests span plant systematics, phylogeny, evolution, and biodiversity, with particular emphasis on the taxonomy and evolutionary relationships of plants in the Solanaceae family. Her work combines field studies, morphological analyses, and molecular techniques to investigate species delimitation, evolutionary relationships, and character evolution. She has made significant contributions to understanding the systematics of Solanum (the largest genus in Solanaceae), Capsicum (chili peppers), and related genera, including studies on the evolution of domesticated species like the tree tomato (Solanum betaceum).
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a consistent focus on taxonomic revisions of Solanaceae genera, particularly Solanum sections, with increasing integration of molecular phylogenetic approaches alongside traditional morphological studies. Her work spans multiple geographic regions including Central and South America, Africa, and North America, reflecting the global distribution of the Solanaceae family. A notable trend is her involvement in large collaborative projects that combine taxonomy with genomic information to better understand plant biodiversity.
Dr. Bohs has mentored numerous graduate and undergraduate students who have contributed to her research program, with many former students now pursuing careers in botany and related fields. She has led significant research initiatives including the NSF-funded 'Solanum: A Worldwide Treatment' project through the Planetary Biodiversity Inventory program, which aims to create a comprehensive taxonomic monograph of the entire genus Solanum.
Her laboratory maintains active research programs on several key projects including the Overall Solanum Phylogeny, Phylogeny and Systematics of Solanum clades, Character Evolution in the Solanaceae, and Systematics and Phylogeny of Capsicum and Lycianthes. The lab frequently conducts field work in South America, with documented expeditions to Peru, Brazil, Guyana, and Ecuador.
