Lynda Nead is the Pevsner Professor of History of Art at Birkbeck, University of London (since 2004). She previously held roles including Visiting Professor of History of Art at Gresham College (2013–2014), Senior Lecturer and Reader at Birkbeck (1984–2004), and Lecturer positions at the University of Kent and Open University. Her research focuses on post-war British visual culture, art criticism, gender studies, and the intersection of art with sport and urban environments. Current projects include a Leverhulme Trust-funded book on post-war British visual culture (1945–60) and co-curation of the exhibition 'The Fallen Woman' at the Foundling Museum (2015).
She co-directs the History and Theory of Photography Research Centre at Birkbeck, fostering interdisciplinary research on photography. Her recent lectures at Gresham College explored fashion, art, and modernity in the 19th century. Awards include a Leverhulme Trust Major Research Fellowship and membership in prestigious art institutions like Tate Britain and the National Portrait Gallery.
Her work bridges historical analysis and contemporary cultural practices, with publications spanning 19th-century art, aesthetics of sport, and visual culture. She actively contributes to museum advisory boards and academic leadership roles.
