Lydia Plowman is Professor Emerita at the University of Edinburgh's Moray House School of Education. Her research examines young children's learning with digital technologies across formal and informal settings, with specific focus on technology integration in family life for educational and leisure purposes.
Plowman's work investigates digital play, family learning practices, and the socio-cultural contexts of technology adoption in early childhood. Her research has significantly contributed to understanding how digital media shapes children's learning experiences and family dynamics.
She serves on the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council Strategic Advisory Network and previously served on the Economic and Social Research Council grants assessment panel. An elected Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences, she brings both academic expertise and practical insights to technology policy discussions.
Her publications include the 'Digital Play' resource for caregivers and professionals, and research on children's understanding of personal data. Plowman has led numerous ESRC-funded projects on children's technology use and maintains an active role in translating research for practical application.
