Lydia McDermott is an Associate Professor of Rhetoric, Writing, and Public Discourse at Whitman College and Director of the Center for Writing and Speaking. She holds a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition from Ohio University (2012), an M.A. in Creative Writing (2007), and a B.A. in English Literature (2000), all from Ohio University. Her research focuses on feminist and queer approaches to rhetoric, particularly examining marginalized bodies and discourses in historical and global contexts. She investigates how rhetoric intersects with reproductive health, midwifery, and resistance to dominant narratives.
McDermott's awards include the NWCCU Beacon Award (2019) and the Graves Award in the Humanities (2018). She has advised students in grants like the Perry Grant (2016) and led the Graduate Writing and Research Center at Ohio University. Her work bridges scholarly research and creative writing, with poetry published in venues like Red Earth Review and Cathexis NW Press. She also maintains a whimsical YouTube series, 'Laura the Rhetorical Pug,' blending pedagogy with humor.
Her academic leadership roles include First Year Seminars Writing Coordinator and Chair of Rhetoric, Writing, and Public Discourse at Whitman. She is actively involved in professional organizations like the Rhetoric Society of America, co-chairing the Feminist Workshop and Rhetoric Special Interest Group.
