Lydia Kwak is an Associate Professor at Karolinska Institutet, working within the Institute of Environmental Medicine where she leads the Unit for Intervention and Implementation Research in Occupational Health. She serves as assistant study director for doctoral education at the Institute of Environmental Medicine and has held academic positions since 2017 as Associate Professor and since 2019 as Senior Lecturer in health promotion. Dr. Kwak heads the research group focused on Methods for Health Promotion in the Workplace.
Dr. Kwak's research focuses on intervention and implementation research within worker health, specifically developing, evaluating, and implementing effective methods to promote health in the workplace with emphasis on preventing stress and mental illness. Her work spans observational studies on health determinants, intervention studies testing effectiveness of workplace methods, and implementation research examining how evidence-based interventions can be effectively integrated into practice. She currently leads a large cluster randomized controlled trial funded by Forte across four municipalities and over 50 Swedish public schools, examining implementation mechanisms for mental health prevention in schools. She also leads a project funded by AFA-insurance examining implementation of support staff in schools to reduce teacher workload and stress.
Her publication record shows strong activity in implementation science, particularly around mental health prevention in educational settings. Recent work demonstrates expertise in cluster-randomized trials, mechanism analysis, ethical considerations in workplace interventions, and return-to-work processes for individuals with common mental disorders. Her research consistently addresses the organizational and social determinants of workplace mental health.

Dr. Kwak actively supervises doctoral students including Anna Frantz, Andreas Rodlund, and Frida Soderstrom, and has been course leader for the doctoral course 'Implementation Research in health' since 2011. Her research group includes multiple affiliated researchers and postdoctoral fellows working collaboratively on workplace health promotion projects. She has developed the Guideline for prevention of mental ill-health in the workplace, which represents a significant contribution to evidence-based practice in occupational health.
