Dr. Lydia Bazzano is a Professor of Epidemiology and Director of the Tulane Center for Lifespan Epidemiology Research at the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She holds the Lynda B. and H. Leighton Steward Professorship in Nutrition Research. Her research focuses on cardiovascular disease, nutrition, and aging, with a particular emphasis on lifespan health trajectories and their impact on cognitive and physical outcomes. Dr. Bazzano leads the Bogalusa Heart Study Program Steering Committee and serves as Medical Director of the Bogalusa Heart Study, investigating vascular aging, cardiometabolic risk factors, and lifelong health patterns. She has over 100 peer-reviewed publications and NIH R01 funding for her work.
- Education: MD, PhD (Epidemiology), MPH, and BS (Ecology/Evolutionary Biology) from Tulane University
- Roles: Director, Tulane Center for Lifespan Epidemiology Research; Principal Investigator, NIH/NIA R01AG041200
Her research interests include dietary interventions, long-term cardiometabolic risk, and the interplay between cardiovascular health and cognitive aging. She has pioneered studies linking childhood risk factors to midlife outcomes using the Bogalusa Heart Study cohort, with a focus on biomarkers, metabolomics, and digital health technologies.
Key findings include associations between dietary patterns, cardiovascular biomarkers, and cognitive function, as well as the role of socioeconomic factors in physical activity and health disparities. Dr. Bazzano’s work bridges clinical practice and population-level research, emphasizing translational strategies to address chronic disease prevention.
- Awards: Fellow of American College of Medicine, Fellow of American College of Nutrition
- Grants: NIH-funded studies on vascular aging, dietary interventions, and multi-omics data integration
Her lab collaborates on smartphone-based cognitive assessment tools and remote biometric monitoring, advancing precision public health approaches in rural and underserved communities.
