Lutz Käppel

Lutz Käppel is a Professor of Classical Philology specializing in Greek Studies at Kiel University. He has been a faculty member since 1999 and currently serves as the speaker of the university research focus "Social Environmental Cultural Change (SECC)" and as a principal investigator for the Excellence Cluster "ROOTS". Additionally, he is the managing editor of the critical edition of Friedrich Schleiermacher's works.

Research Interests: Professor Käppel's research spans Greek Tragedy, Greek Lyric Poetry, History of Greek Mathematics, Greek Mythology, and the History of Classical Philology. He is particularly known for his work on Schleiermacher's translation of Plato's works and the concept of the ancient library as a dynamic encyclopedia. His current projects integrate these interests with the interdisciplinary theme of Human Development in Landscapes.

Grants and Leadership: Professor Käppel has led numerous significant research projects, including the Collaborative Research Center (SFB) 1266 "TransformationsDimensions" (2016-2024) and the Excellence Cluster "ROOTS" (since 2019). He served as Dean of the Faculty of Humanities (2006-2008) and has been instrumental in establishing graduate schools and research clusters at Kiel University.

Teams and Collaborations: As the speaker of the research focus SECC and co-coordinator of the Graduate School "Human Development in Landscapes", Professor Käppel leads interdisciplinary teams addressing societal, environmental, and cultural change in historical contexts. His work in the Excellence Cluster "ROOTS" involves collaboration across multiple institutions to study connectivity in past societies.
