Lutz Kaelber is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Vermont, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. He specializes in collective memory, Nazi Germany, and Max Weber's sociological theory. Educated at the University of Mannheim (Diplom in Economics and Sociology) and Indiana University (PhD, 1996 under David Zaret), his work bridges historical sociology and Holocaust studies.
His research focuses on Nazi medical crimes against children, particularly the 'Special Children’s Wards' and eugenics policies. Key publications include Schools of Asceticism (1998, ASA Best Book Award) and co-edited volumes like Child Murder and “Special Children’s Wards” in National Socialism (2011). He translates and analyzes Weber’s works, contributing to sociological theory debates.
Recent articles explore commemoration practices of Nazi atrocities and the Hadamar ‘Mixed-Race Ward.’ He chairs the Miller Center for Holocaust Studies’ faculty committee since 2007, advancing interdisciplinary Holocaust education and research.
