Lutz Goehring is a Professor holding the Warren Wright, Sr.-Lucille Wright Markey Endowed Chair in Equine Infectious Diseases at the University of Kentucky's Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. He is based at the Gluck Equine Research Center where he serves as Director of the World Organization of Animal Health reference laboratory for EHV-1.
Dr. Goehring graduated with a DVM from Utrecht University in the Netherlands and is a board-certified specialist in veterinary internal medicine (large animal) by both the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) and the European College of Equine Internal Medicine (ECEIM).
His primary research focuses on Equid alphaherpesvirus 1 (EHV-1), investigating how this virus causes neurological disease (EHM) and abortion in horses. His laboratory has conducted research on both sides of the Atlantic for over two decades, examining viral pathogenesis, latency mechanisms, transmission dynamics, and vaccine efficacy. Key research areas include:
- Pathogen-host interactions leading to neurological disease and abortion
- Viremic spread mechanisms and systemic inflammatory responses
- Latency establishment and reactivation in trigeminal ganglia and lymphatic tissues
- Environmental transmission and infectious dose dynamics
- Vaccine and therapeutic testing
Analysis of his recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on EHV-1 pathogenesis, particularly viral distribution in neural and lymphoid tissues, epidemiological aspects of outbreaks, environmental persistence, and therapeutic interventions. His work bridges basic virology with clinical applications in equine medicine.
Dr. Goehring leads the Lutz Goehring Research Group at the Gluck Equine Research Center, which serves as the World Organization of Animal Health reference laboratory for EHV-1. His team conducts experimental infections, outbreak investigations, and vaccine efficacy studies to better understand and control this significant equine pathogen.
