Luke Wood is a Senior Lecturer in Fine Arts at the University of Canterbury's Faculty of Arts, where he has been employed since December 2010. He specializes in graphic design, communication design, and the intersection of design with music and publishing.
Education:
- MDes, RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia (2005-2008)
- BFA, University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand (1993-1996)
Wood's research focuses on the social, cultural, and political implications of design practices, with work spanning typography, publishing, music, writing, and pedagogy. His research often explores the relationship between visual design and music culture, particularly vinyl records as artistic objects. He has published extensively on New Zealand design history and critical writing about graphic design.
Wood's publications demonstrate a consistent focus on independent publishing platforms, particularly through his journal The National Grid, and the visual culture surrounding music, especially vinyl records and alternative music scenes in New Zealand. His work shows a strong commitment to documenting and critiquing local design practices while connecting them to international contexts.
Awards:
- The National Grid (journal) won many awards during its initial run (2006-2012)
Wood is registered to supervise Master's and Doctoral students at the University of Canterbury. In 2025, he is on sabbatical to work on a new book, 'Outlaw Eye: The Photographs of John 'Woody' Woodhams', and is collaborating with an expanded editorial team to revive The National Grid.
He runs Ilam Press, an in-house publishing workshop at the School of Fine Arts, and Ilam Press Records, a speculative record label. His work bridges academic research with practical design and publishing, creating platforms for critical discourse around graphic design in Aotearoa New Zealand.
