Dr. Barbara Garrie is a Senior Lecturer Above the Bar in the Department of Art History at the University of Canterbury's Faculty of Arts, where she has been teaching since August 2012. Her academic home is in the Karl Popper building, room 505, and she holds a PhD from the University of Canterbury.
Dr. Garrie's research focuses on artist-led publishing practices with particular emphasis on:
- History of Artist's Books in Aotearoa New Zealand
- Eco-materialities within contemporary art publishing
- Post-quake artistic responses in Christchurch (Ōtautahi)
- Curatorial practices and exhibition histories
- Feminist art practices and intergenerational dialogues
Her scholarly work demonstrates strong engagement with the intersections of book arts, material culture, and environmental concerns. Recent publications explore weather representation in contemporary art, feminist art histories, and the role of publishing in art ecosystems, with particular focus on New Zealand contexts and post-disaster recovery.
Dr. Garrie serves as an editor for the Christchurch Art Gallery Bulletin and has participated in numerous professional activities including the 'Curating Under Pressure' symposium on ethics in biennial curation, initiated by ifa and Goethe-Institute in cooperation with Creative New Zealand and the University of Canterbury.
She actively supervises a diverse cohort of graduate students working on topics including:
- Contemporary art practices and methodologies
- Curatorial strategies in New Zealand and Australia
- Art and environmental concerns
- Feminist art histories and intergenerational dialogues
- Art in post-disaster contexts and cultural recovery
- Art market analysis and blockchain applications
