Dr Luke Smythe is a Senior Lecturer in Art History and Theory at Monash University's Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture. He holds a PhD in Art History from Yale University (2012) and an MA in Curatorial Studies from Columbia University (2006), focusing on Len Lye's cinematic works. His academic career includes teaching positions at Otago University (New Zealand) and Wesleyan University (USA), alongside curatorial roles at institutions like the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich and the Chinati Foundation.
Research interests span modern and contemporary German art, postwar abstraction, digital media transitions, and New Zealand modernism. Notable publications include monographs on Gerhard Richter and Gretchen Albrecht, with articles featured in October, Modernism/modernity, and Art Journal. He has curated exhibitions at the Yale University Art Gallery and received funding from DAAD, Fulbright, and the Australian Academy of the Humanities.
