Professor Luke Russell is a faculty member at the University of Sydney, affiliated with the School of Philosophical and Historical Inquiry (SOPHI) and the Department of Philosophy. He holds a BA (Hons) and PhD in Philosophy from the University of Sydney (PhD awarded 2002). His research focuses on moral philosophy, particularly the nature of evil, forgiveness, and virtue. He teaches undergraduate philosophy courses, including Moral Psychology and Critical Thinking, as well as courses at the Sydney Business School.
Education: BA (Hons) and PhD in Philosophy from the University of Sydney.
Research interests span moral evil, ethical normativity, forgiveness theory, and aesthetic virtue. Recent work explores corporate evil, forgiveness mechanisms, and the philosophical underpinnings of atrocity. He has published extensively in books like Real Forgiveness (2023) and Evil: A Very Short Introduction (2022).
Teaching includes PHIL2623 Moral Psychology, PHIL2642 Critical Thinking, and OLET2148 Thinking Critically. He advises one current PhD student, Luwen LIANG, on a project titled 'Self and the general point of view: Hume’s sympathy.'
Grants include a $5,000 SOPHI Research Pitch Session Award (2021) for work on forgiveness and institutional punishment. Media engagements include ABC Radio discussions on evil and forgiveness, and a podcast on forgiveness philosophy with the Institutet för framtidsstudier.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with interdisciplinary groups on ethics and moral psychology. Active in public philosophy through media interviews and academic podcasts.
