Luke Messac is an emergency physician and historian affiliated with Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he holds the rank of Instructor in Emergency Medicine. He completed his BA at Harvard University, followed by an MD and PhD (History and Sociology of Science) from the University of Pennsylvania. His residency in emergency medicine was undertaken at Brown University/Rhode Island Hospital.
His research focuses on the intersection of healthcare history, political economy, and global health equity. Key themes include the historical neglect of healthcare systems in Malawi, critiques of GDP metrics in healthcare evaluation, and the evolution of medical debt collection practices in the United States. His work bridges clinical practice and historical analysis, emphasizing systemic inequities in healthcare access and financing.
Messac’s first book, *No More to Spend* (2020), examines how colonial and postcolonial administrations in Malawi used claims of scarcity to justify inadequate healthcare spending, earning a CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title designation. His second book, *Your Money or Your Life* (2023), traces the history of medical debt collection in the U.S., highlighting its impact on patients and the erosion of trust in healthcare systems.
He has contributed to peer-reviewed journals such as *The New England Journal of Medicine* and collaborates with organizations like Partners In Health. His advocacy work addresses systemic barriers to healthcare equity, combining historical insights with contemporary policy analysis.
