Joia S. Mukherjee is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and an Associate Professor of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She serves as the Advisory Dean of the Francis Weld Peabody Society at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Mukherjee directs the Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery program and the Program in Global Medical Education and Social Change. She specializes in global health equity, infectious diseases, and health systems strengthening, with a focus on human rights-centered healthcare delivery.
Her education includes a medical degree from the University of Minnesota Medical School, training in infectious disease, internal medicine, and pediatrics at Massachusetts General Hospital, and an MPH from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Dr. Mukherjee leads Partners In Health (PIH) as Chief Medical Officer, overseeing clinical programs in Haiti, Rwanda, Malawi, Lesotho, Peru, Mexico, Russia, Sierra Leone, and Liberia. She advises Ministries of Health and the WHO on HIV, TB, and health workforce development. She also chairs the board of Village Health Works (Burundi) and Muso (Mali), and supports grassroots organizations globally.
Her research and advocacy emphasize community-based healthcare and reducing health disparities. She has pioneered residency and fellowship programs in Rwanda, Haiti, and the U.S., shaping global health training.
