Prof. Dr. Lukas Mühlethaler is a Professor of Jewish Philosophy and Aesthetics at the Institute of Jewish Studies, part of the Department of History and Cultural Studies at the Freie Universität Berlin. He holds a Master’s in Jewish Thought from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and a Ph.D. in Arabic and Islamic Studies from Yale University. His research focuses on medieval Jewish and Islamic philosophy, with particular attention to figures like Ibn Kammūna and Maimonides, as well as the reception of Maimonides’ Dalālat al-ḥā’irīn in Arabic philosophical circles.
He has authored and co-authored works on topics such as the soul’s pre-eternity in Avicenna’s ontology, the Flying Man argument, and the popularization of medieval philosophy across cultures. His research also engages with the interplay between philosophy and theology in Islamicate and Jewish contexts. He leads projects like the #LastSeen initiative documenting historical photographs of Nazi deportations and participates in collaborative efforts at the Selma Stern Center for Jewish Studies Berlin-Brandenburg.
Prof. Mühlethaler teaches courses on medieval Arab-Jewish literature and modern Jewish intellectual history, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches. His office is located at Fabeckstr. 23/25, Room 0.2055, and he offers weekly online consultation hours via Webex.
