Prof. Lukas Hintermann is a Professor of Organic Chemistry at the Technical University of Munich (TUM), specifically within the TUM School of Natural Sciences and the Department of Chemistry. His research focuses on the development of highly active and selective catalysts for organic synthesis, with applications ranging from basic molecular research to industrial production processes. He leads the Professorship for Catalytic Organic Synthesis and is affiliated with the TUM Catalysis Research Center (CRC).
Prof. Hintermann's research expertise spans several key areas in modern organic chemistry:
- Hydrofunctionalization reactions
- Cross coupling methodologies
- Novel catalysis concepts
- Organocatalysis
- Synthetic bioorganics
His work emphasizes waste-free (atom-economical) reactions that enable precise synthesis of target structures from simple building blocks, contributing to sustainable and efficient synthetic chemistry that conserves resources and minimizes environmental impact. Prof. Hintermann has developed catalysts based on metal complexes and small organic molecules for sustainable organic synthesis (SOS), with particular focus on asymmetric catalysis and the creation of new materials with minimal resource expenditure.
His most recent publications demonstrate continued innovation in ligand design, catalytic mechanisms, and sustainable synthetic methodologies, with a consistent focus on atom-economy and environmental considerations. The research trends show an evolution from fundamental catalyst development toward increasingly sophisticated applications in complex molecule synthesis.
Prof. Hintermann has received several prestigious awards including:
- Friedrich Wilhelm Prize of RWTH Aachen (2009)
- Heisenberg Fellowship of the German Research Foundation (2009)
- SNSF Professorship of the Swiss National Science Foundation (2009)
- ETH Medal (2001)
He serves in various academic and administrative roles including as Secretary of the Munich Chemical Society, member of the International Advisory Board for Helvetica Chimica Acta, and Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Dr. Anton Kalojanoff Foundation. Within TUM, he serves as an Examiner for the First State Examination for Teaching in Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry, and as a member of the Bachelor of Food Chemistry Examination Board.
