Lukas B. Rieppel is an Associate Professor of History and Director of the Science, Technology, and Society (STS) program at Brown University. He holds a PhD from Harvard University (2012) and teaches courses on American History, Environmental History, the History of Capitalism, and the History of Science. His research explores how large-scale social systems like capitalism and imperialism shape scientific knowledge production.
Education: PhD and AM in History (Harvard University, 2012), BA from McGill University (2004). His work focuses particularly on the history of paleontology, museums, and environmental science. Notable publications include Assembling the Dinosaur (2019) and co-editing Science and Capitalism: Entangled Histories (2018).
Research interests span the intersections of science with capitalism, imperialism, and material culture. Current projects investigate the global history of Earth sciences and the transdisciplinary concept of 'organization' in biology and political economy. He has held visiting scholar positions at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science and Harvard University.
Awards include the Mellon Foundation New Directions Fellowship (2023), Richard B. Salomon Faculty Research Award (2014), and Marjorie Grene Prize (2013). His teaching emphasizes critical engagement with science's societal roles, reflected in courses like 'Science and Capitalism' and 'Earth Histories.'
Rieppel directs Brown's STS program and collaborates with institutions globally. His advocacy for fossil repatriation and museum ethics underscores his commitment to addressing colonial legacies in scientific practice.
