Prof. Luitzen de Boer is a Professor at NTNU's Department of Industrial Economics and Technology Management within the Faculty of Economics and Management. His academic career began with an MSc and PhD in Industrial Engineering from the University of Twente (Netherlands), before joining NTNU in 2004.
His research focuses on sustainable procurement practices, circular economy strategies in construction sectors, and innovation ecosystems. He explores how public procurement mechanisms can drive environmental performance, particularly in zero-emission neighborhood (ZEN) projects. His work integrates systemic thinking, stakeholder collaboration, and lifecycle assessment methodologies.
Teaching responsibilities include leadership, strategic purchasing, supply chain management, and innovation in public procurement. He has authored over 100 publications, including peer-reviewed articles in Sustainability, Journal of Cleaner Production, and Environment Systems and Decisions, as well as co-editing the book Operations Management and Sustainability (2019).
Prof. de Boer actively contributes to international conferences such as EurOMA and IPSERA, addressing topics like procurement architecture, systemic sustainability challenges, and policy frameworks for green innovation. His research bridges academic theory with practical applications in urban development and industrial systems.
