Dr. Luisa A. DiPietro serves as Professor of Periodontics and Director of the UIC Center for Wound Healing and Tissue Regeneration at the University of Illinois Chicago College of Dentistry, where she also acts as UIC scientific director for the Chicago Biomedical Consortium. Her leadership drives multidisciplinary research into tissue repair mechanisms and regenerative therapies.
Her educational foundation includes:
- BS in Biology (James Scholar) from University of Illinois Urbana (1976)
- DDS with honors from University of Illinois Chicago (1980)
- Residency in General Dentistry at Michael Reese Hospital (1982-83)
- PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from University of Illinois Chicago (1989)
- Postdoctoral Fellowship in Pathology at Northwestern University (1989-92)
Dr. DiPietro's pioneering research compares oral mucosa and skin healing, revealing that oral wounds regenerate with minimal inflammation and optimal angiogenesis. Her lab investigates cellular mechanisms using adult/fetal skin and oral mucosa models, focusing on genomic regulation of wound repair and computational modeling to develop regenerative therapies for chronic wounds, particularly in diabetic patients.
Analysis of her 2021-2025 publications shows concentrated exploration of molecular pathways in diabetic wound healing (NRF2 activators, macrophage reprogramming), neuro-immune crosstalk in stress-impaired healing, and standardization of research methodologies through the WRAHPS guidelines. Her work bridges dentistry, immunology, and tissue engineering to address translational barriers in wound care.
Her distinguished recognition includes:
- Lifetime Achievement Award from the Wound Healing Society
- Mentor of the Year Award from AADR Student Research Group
- University of Illinois University Scholar Award
- Elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science
With over $19 million in extramural grants and 27,000+ citations, Dr. DiPietro directs a high-impact research program while mentoring future scientists. She serves on the NIH's National Advisory Dental and Craniofacial Research Council, shaping national research priorities in craniofacial health.
The UIC Center for Wound Healing and Tissue Regeneration under her leadership integrates immunology, molecular biology, and clinical dentistry to accelerate regenerative medicine breakthroughs through cross-disciplinary collaboration.
