Luis de Lecea serves as Professor in Stanford University School of Medicine's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences with dual affiliation in the Neurosciences Program. He maintains active teaching responsibilities across all academic quarters through research-intensive courses.
His research focuses on sleep neurobiology with specialization in hypocretin/orexin systems and circadian regulation. Work in his laboratory investigates molecular mechanisms of sleep-wake transitions and their disruption in neurological disorders, particularly narcolepsy. This research bridges fundamental neuroscience with clinical psychiatry through translational approaches.
Professor de Lecea supervises students through multiple pathways including Undergraduate Research (PSYC 199), Graduate Research (NEPR 399/PSYC 399), Medical Scholars projects (PSYC 370), and directed readings (PSYC 299/NEPR 299). His mentorship spans molecular neuroscience techniques to clinical sleep medicine applications, fostering development of next-generation researchers in sleep science.
