معرفی
Dr. Luis Valentin Alvarado is a Research Fellow at the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute (Monash University) in Dr. Gavin Knott’s lab, specializing in microbial genomics and ecosystem-scale genomics. He holds a PhD in Microbiology from UC Berkeley (2024) and a BSc in Microbiology and Chemistry from the University of Puerto Rico (2016). His research focuses on microbial evolution, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and enzymes driving biogeochemical cycles in subsurface ecosystems, employing genomics, biochemistry, and AI.
Education:
- PhD in Microbial Genomics & Ecosystem-Scale Genomics, UC Berkeley (2024)
- BSc in Microbiology & Chemistry, University of Puerto Rico (2016)
Research Interests: Luis investigates how MGEs and microbial hosts co-evolve through nucleic acid enzymes, with a focus on archaeal lineages (e.g., Asgard archaea) and CRISPR systems. His work explores carbon cycling, hydrogen production, and epigenetic regulation in uncultivated microbes. He generates complete genomes to elucidate metabolic networks and enzymatic functions critical to ecosystem dynamics.
Projects:
- Primary Chief Investigator (PCI) of the project Systematic discovery of evolutionary origins and functional diversity of methyltransferases (2025–2028).
Labs/Teams: Knott Lab (Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute), previously collaborated with Prof. Jill Banfield and Prof. Dave Savage at UC Berkeley.
