Luis Medina

Luis Medina is a Lecturer and IDEA Fellow at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences of Stony Brook University. His research focuses on sustainable climate justice solutions, particularly through advanced vibrational spectrometry techniques.

• Education: Ph.D. (2022) from Stony Brook University

Research Interests: Medina specializes in the analysis of oceanic microplastics (MPs) and black carbon (BC) particles, their interactions with marine organisms, and their impact on global carbon budgets. His work combines:

• Chemical quantification via Raman microspectroscopy and FT-IR
• Vertical/horizontal transport mechanisms of MPs/BC
• Biodegradation by marine bacteria/fungi
• Integration into climate models

Recent Publications highlight advancements in microplastic analysis (2021), oxygen minimum zone microbial dynamics (2020), protist grazing studies (2027), and river nutrient transport (2013).
