Christopher Gobler is a Professor and Endowed Chair of Coastal Ecology and Conservation at the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS), Stony Brook University. He holds a Ph.D. from Stony Brook University (1999). His research focuses on coastal ecosystem ecology, climate change impacts, harmful algal blooms, ocean acidification, and aquatic biogeochemistry. His lab investigates how anthropogenic activities disrupt coastal ecosystems and seeks mitigation strategies through interdisciplinary approaches.
- Education: Ph.D. in Marine Science, Stony Brook University, 1999
Research interests include the ecological consequences of harmful algal blooms (HABs), climate change effects on marine resources, and the development of sustainable solutions for coastal pollution. His work spans from lab experiments to field trials, such as testing marine carbon dioxide removal strategies and evaluating kelp cultivation for toxin mitigation.
Recent publications highlight his focus on toxin dynamics in shellfish, PFAS accumulation in estuarine organisms, and the role of zooplankton grazing in controlling HABs. His lab’s efforts also address wastewater treatment innovations and the ecological impacts of ocean acidification on bivalves and kelp.
- Scientific Awards: Endowed Chair of Coastal Ecology and Conservation, Distinguished Professor
Collaborative projects include partnerships with government agencies and NGOs to advance coastal conservation. His lab’s outreach emphasizes bridging scientific findings with policy and public awareness.
