Luis Cifuentes serves as Vice President for Research at New Mexico State University (NMSU), leading the Department of Geological Sciences. His research focuses on geochemistry, volcanology, mineralogy, structural geology, and sedimentology. He oversees initiatives such as the Southern Rift Institute and manages facilities like the Mineral Separation Lab and Analytical Equipment Suite.
Expertise areas include isotopic analysis of environmental contaminants, estuarine nutrient cycling, and coastal ecosystem dynamics. His work bridges applied science and policy, exemplified by projects like the Texas Water Roadmap Forums and the South Texas Sustainability Network.
Publications emphasize stable isotope applications in tracing carbon and nitrogen pathways, microbial metabolism in polluted environments, and seagrass-lagoon interactions. He has secured major instrumentation grants, including the MRI-funded Elemental Stable Isotope Chemistry (ESIC) Mass Spectrometer.
Collaborative efforts include cross-institutional research networks addressing water security, marine sustainability, and bioremediation. Current projects focus on advancing geoscience education pathways and mitigating environmental impacts of human activities.
Lab facilities under his direction support cutting-edge geochemical analyses, while his administrative role drives interdisciplinary research initiatives at NMSU.
