Lucía V. Aranda is a Professor of Spanish and Chair of the Department of Languages & Literatures of Europe & the Americas at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa since 2019. She previously served as Director of the Center for Interpretation and Translation Studies (CITS). Her expertise spans Spanish-English translation, interpreting, and U.S. Latino literature. She teaches courses such as SPAN 405 and has authored influential works like Handbook of Spanish-English Translation (2007) and Introducción a los estudios de traducción (2016).
Her research focuses on translation studies, code-switching, and immigrant narratives, as seen in her recent collaborative article on social media translation (Meta, 2023). She co-edits Biography (Spanish-language section) and serves on the editorial board of ELIA (Estudios de lingüística aplicada).
Prof. Aranda volunteers as an interpreter at the William S. Richardson School of Law’s Refugee & Immigration Law Clinic. She has received notable awards for teaching excellence, including the 2006 HALT Award and 2010 Frances Davis Award. She is organizing the 2024 Audiovisual Summer Institute, featuring modules on dubbing, subtitling, and audio description.
