Dr Lucy Xia Zhao is a University Associate Professor in Chinese Language & Linguistics at the University of Cambridge's Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (AMES). She is a Fellow and Director of Studies at Newnham College. Previously, she held roles at the University of Sheffield, including Senior Lecturer in Chinese Studies and management positions related to China engagement.
Education:
- BA in English Language and Literature (China)
- MA in Applied Linguistics and Intercultural Communication (China)
- MPhil and PhD in Chinese Linguistics and Language Acquisition (University of Cambridge)
Research Interests: Focuses on second/third language and heritage Mandarin acquisition through generative linguistics. Examines native language influence, input, computational complexity in adult learners, and heritage language maintenance/loss via parental input and multilingual contexts.
Teaching: Leads the undergraduate modern Chinese language program and teaches courses like Chinese Linguistics and Special Chinese Language Options. Supervises MPhil/PhD students on L2 acquisition topics.
Editorial Roles: Member of the International Society of Chinese Language Teaching's Standards Working Group and editorial board member for Bilingualism: Language and Cognition and Journal of Chinese Language Teaching.
