Lucy Saunders is a Beamline Scientist on I11 at Diamond Light Source, the UK's national synchrotron science facility. She holds a PhD in Structural Chemistry from the University of Bath (jointly funded by Diamond) and previously served as a postdoctoral research associate on beamline I19 at Diamond.
Her educational background includes:
- PhD in Structural Chemistry, University of Bath (Diamond Light Source joint funding)
Lucy's research focuses on proton transfer behavior in multi-component molecular crystals under external stimuli and electric field responsive crystalline materials with switchable properties. She investigates structural phase transitions induced by proton transfer and develops applications for micro-actuators and computer memory using combined diffraction, spectroscopy, and computational methods. Her technical contributions include the Polarisation-Electric field loop system on beamline I11 for simultaneous X-ray diffraction and polarization measurements under electric fields.
As part of Diamond's Crystallography team, Lucy prepares beamlines for user experiments and provides expert support during data collection, enabling advancements in materials science research through synchrotron techniques.
