Dr. Lucy McDonald is a Lecturer in Ethics at King's College London's Department of Philosophy, part of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities. She holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and previously served as a Junior Research Fellow at St John's College, Cambridge (2020-2023). Her research focuses on ethics, philosophy of language, and feminist philosophy, with specializations in internet/social media ethics, gender dynamics in communication, and the ethics of personal relationships.
Education: BA (PPE) and BPhil from the University of Oxford; PhD in Philosophy from Cambridge (dissertation: 'Speech, Sex, and Social Norms').
Research interests include:
- Ethical dimensions of personal relationships and power dynamics
- Philosophical analysis of social media's impact on communication (emoji, likes, algorithmic curation)
- Speech acts and their role in social power structures (gaslighting, dehumanization)
She co-convened the 'Illuminating Friendship' research network (2020-2023) and contributes to public philosophy through writings in Aeon, The Times Literary Supplement, and others. She teaches courses combining philosophy with music analysis, such as her undergraduate 'Philosophy of Love' module using songs like Bob Marley's 'One Love.'
Award: Royal Institute of Philosophy essay prize (2021).
