Lucy MacKenzie Howie is a researcher at the University of St Andrews, affiliated with the School of Art History and the Centre for Contemporary Art. Her PhD research, funded by the SGSAH-AHRC and supervised by both departments, examines intersections of disability, sexuality, and representation in 1980s-1990s British lens-based media. Focusing on experimental works by women, queer, and trans artists, her work critiques documentary form and its engagement with disability activism and Section 28-era politics.
She has presented at venues including the University of Cambridge and the Image Centre in Toronto, and conducted archival research across multiple institutions. Awards include the Arts & Humanities Research Council Doctoral Training Partnership Scholarship (2022) and the Dean's List (2019). Her research bridges feminist theory, queer methodologies, and disability studies to uncover intersectional narratives in art and media history.
Recent activities include a visiting research period at the University of Cambridge (June-Sept 2024) and collaborative projects with institutions like Toronto Metropolitan University. She has also received grants from the British Art Network and the Paul Mellon Centre to support her interdisciplinary work.
