Dr. Lucy Hopkins is a Lecturer in Children and Family Studies at the School of Arts and Humanities, Edith Cowan University (ECU), within the Social Sciences discipline. She previously held roles as a Lecturer in Sociology at Royal Thimphu College, Bhutan (2013-2014), and as a Research Assistant and Sessional Lecturer at Western Sydney University (2008-2012). She earned her PhD from Western Sydney University in 2013.
Her research focuses on cultural studies, literature, education, and sociology, with emphasis on global childhoods, social justice, and poststructuralist/feminist theories. Current projects include studies on Bhutanese youth’s cultural politics of hair, yak herder children’s perspectives on poverty, and child subjectivity in literary fiction. Notable grants include a Healthway-funded project (2023–2025) examining climate change’s impact on children’s mental health ($74,993) and ECU’s Early-Mid Career Researcher Grant (2023–2024) exploring parental perceptions of climate change effects.
Her recent publications highlight intersections between environmental policy and childhood (e.g., 2025’s 'Nation, nature and childhood'), gender discourses (2019’s 'Ladies, Gentlemen and Guys'), and literary analyses of postcolonial narratives. She actively supervises doctoral research on youth activism in Sikkim and transnational identities of Bhutanese students.
Dr. Hopkins’ work bridges academic theory with community engagement, emphasizing culturally responsive pedagogy and social equity. Her research outputs span journals like Critical Studies in Education and book chapters in Routledge and Palgrave Macmillan series.
