Lucy Dumbell is a Senior Lecturer in the Equine Department at Hartpury University, where she has held diverse roles since 1999. Her academic contributions include programme management for foundation, honours, and master’s degrees, staff leadership, and executive governance. She has served as an external examiner for York St John University and Nottingham Trent University, and contributed to curriculum development for UK higher education institutions.
Her research focuses on human-animal interactions in equestrianism, particularly rider roles and biomechanics, as well as advancing teaching methodologies. Notable projects include studies on rider pain management, breast health in equestrians, and the efficacy of online educational tools. Her work extends to zoo visitor-animal interactions and zoo messaging strategies.
Lucy holds a DPhil (2022) from Hartpury University titled 'Profiles of British Equestrian Olympians: evaluating historical, cultural and sporting influences and how they could inform equestrianism in the future.' She has over 47 peer-reviewed research outputs and is active in academic networks, participating in conferences like the QAA Annual Conference and workshops on apprenticeship agreements.
Her professional activities highlight engagement with teaching innovation, quality assurance, and industry standards. Collaborations span equine welfare, veterinary nursing education, and zoo management.
