Lucian N. Leustean is a Reader in Politics and International Relations at Aston University, affiliated with the Aston Centre for Europe. His research focuses on religion's role in European integration, Eastern Orthodoxy, and Cold War history. He holds a PhD from the London School of Economics and has taught since 2007.
Leustean has secured grants from institutions such as the British Academy and the European Commission. His work includes twelve authored/edited books, including The Oxford Handbook of Religion and Europe. Awards include the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award (2023) and the George Blazyca Prize (2010).
Teaching interests include Religion and Politics in Contemporary Europe, Diplomacy, and EU Studies. His research explores religious diplomacy, forced displacement, and the intersection of religion with EU policy. He founded the Routledge series on Religion and Eastern Europe.
Recent articles analyze the role of religion in Ukraine-Russia conflicts and the EU's engagement with Orthodox churches. His work bridges historical analysis with contemporary policy challenges, emphasizing Eastern Europe and post-communist transitions.
