Lucas Robert James is the GSK Professor of Neuroscience at the University of Manchester's Faculty of Life Sciences. He holds a BSc in Biological Sciences from the University of York (1989) and a PhD in neuroendocrine biology from the Institute of Zoology, London (under Andrew Loudon). His postdoctoral work at Imperial College under Russell Foster led to breakthroughs in identifying non-rod/non-cone photoreceptors. Since 2003, he has led a research group at Manchester, focusing on melanopsin-based vision, circadian rhythms, and retinal photoreception. Current grants include €2.5M from the ERC and £500K from BBSRC.
He teaches chronobiology and vision science to undergraduates and medical students. Professional roles include editorial board memberships (Wiley Reviews, Journal of Genetics) and UK representation on CEN’s non-visual light effects committee. His lab has trained 5 PhD students and launched postdocs into academic positions at universities like Kent and Manchester. Awards include the 2010 ERC Advanced Grant.
Key research themes include melanopsin’s role in health/disease, optogenetic applications of box jellyfish opsins, and mouse visual function studies. His work bridges basic neuroscience with clinical implications, supported by major UK/EU funding bodies.
