Lucas E. Morel serves as the John K. Boardman, Jr. Professor of Politics and Head of the Politics Department at Washington and Lee University, holding a Ph.D. in political science from Claremont Graduate University.

His research centers on American political thought, with specialized focus on the American founding, Abraham Lincoln's political philosophy, race and politics, and literature's role in political theory. Key publications include the authored works Lincoln and the American Founding and Lincoln’s Sacred Effort: Defining Religion’s Role in American Self-Government, plus edited volumes on Lincoln and Ralph Ellison.
Recent scholarship features his 2024 contribution to Classical Liberals on Race, analyzing historical perspectives on racial issues within classical liberal frameworks. This work continues his exploration of foundational American political ideas and their contemporary relevance.
Professor Morel maintains significant external appointments including trustee of the Supreme Court Historical Society, former presidency of the Abraham Lincoln Institute, and current membership on the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission. His departmental leadership provides academic oversight while enabling mentorship in political theory and American politics.
