Luca Scorrano is the Scientific Director of the Venetian Institute of Molecular Medicine (VIMM) and Full Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Padua, Italy. He holds dual expertise in medicine and molecular biology, with a PhD from the University of Padua and postdoctoral training at Harvard Medical School. His research focuses on mitochondrial dynamics, interorganellar contacts, and their roles in cell signaling, apoptosis, and age-related diseases.
- Positions: Scientific Director (VIMM), Full Professor (University of Padua), Former Professor at University of Geneva Medical School
- Educations: MD and PhD from University of Padua; Postdoc at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School
His lab discovered critical mechanisms linking mitochondrial morphology to cellular processes like apoptosis, autophagy, and heart development. Notable contributions include identifying Opa1’s role in cristae structure, the first molecular bridge between mitochondria and ER via Mitofusin 2, and mitochondrial metabolic barriers against intracellular parasites.
Research interests integrate genetics, advanced imaging, and biochemistry to study mitochondrial form-function relationships in health and disease. He chairs EMBO Fellowship Committee and serves on editorial boards of Cell Death & Differentiation and Cardiovascular Research.
- Awards: Elected EMBO Member (2012), ESCI Excellence Award (2013), Academia Europaea Membership (2019)
- Grants: ERC Consolidator Grant, Telethon Foundation, MDA, AIRC
Current projects explore mitochondrial dynamics in aging-associated pathologies and their therapeutic potential. His lab is part of VIMM’s advanced facilities for bioimaging and cellular analysis.
