Luca Sapienza serves as a University Associate Professor and Fellow at the Department of Engineering, University of Cambridge, holding dual leadership roles as Dean and Director of Studies for Engineering (Parts IIA and IIB, and MET). His academic profile positions him at the intersection of advanced quantum research and engineering education within one of the world's leading technological institutions.
His research program rigorously explores light-matter interactions at the nanoscale, with emphasis on quantum phenomena in engineered nanostructures. Current investigations span quantum photonic devices incorporating single-photon emitters, heterogeneous nanofabrication techniques, plasmonic systems, disordered/aperiodic photonic crystals, and quantum biological applications—particularly on-chip analysis of photosynthetic light-harvesters. This multidisciplinary work bridges fundamental quantum optics with tangible applications in quantum sensing and technology development.
Dr. Sapienza's recognition includes the prestigious Ing. Aldo Gini Prize of Excellence. He actively shapes the field through leadership as Chair of the Institute of Physics' Semiconductor Physics Group and editorial responsibilities for Materials for Quantum Technology. His science-policy engagement was demonstrated through participation in the Royal Society Pairing Scheme with UK Parliament, reflecting commitment to translating research into societal impact.
