He earned his PhD in History and Theory of Modern and Contemporary Constitutions from the University of Macerata in 2008 and has since been deeply engaged in research on 18th- and 19th-century political thought, particularly the Scottish Enlightenment and its transatlantic influence. - PhD in History and Theory of Modern and Contemporary Constitutions, University of Macerata (2008)
- Laurea in History of Contemporary Political Thought, University of Bologna (2003)
His research centers on the historical development of public opinion, constitutionalism, and the emergence of the social sciences. He examines how political concepts such as society, authority, and democracy evolved from Hume and Rousseau to Durkheim and Marx. His recent work explores the political psychology of mass behavior, colonialism, and the sociology of knowledge. He has published extensively on figures including David Hume, John Stuart Mill, Émile Durkheim, and Karl Marx, analyzing their ideas in relation to broader social transformations.
His most recent publications reflect a deep engagement with the intersections of political theory, social psychology, and colonial history. Themes such as 'the government of opinion,' 'the colonial lever,' and 'the disciplined melancholy' illustrate his unique approach to understanding modern political thought through its historical and conceptual tensions. His articles span journals such as Scienza&Politica, Giornale di Storia Costituzionale, and Politics. Rivista di studi politici.
His scientific recognition includes the Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale (ASN) for seconda fascia in Political Thought (GSPS-03/A), valid from 2021 to 2030. He is also a member of the editorial boards of Storia del pensiero politico and Scienza&Politica, and since 2024, a member of the scientific committee for the 'Critica sociologica' book series at Castelvecchi.
Luca Cobbe has collaborated on major national research projects, often coordinated by Professor Luca Scuccimarra, and has participated in numerous academic conferences and seminars across Italy. He has not advised formal PhD students listed in the text, but his collaborative work with scholars like Paola Rudan and Maurizio Ricciardi suggests mentorship and academic guidance. He has contributed to edited volumes and organized interdisciplinary seminars, particularly on ecological discourse and public sphere contradictions.
He is actively involved in the academic community through memberships in the Associazione italiana storici delle dottrine politiche (AISDP) and editorial roles. His research projects funded by Sapienza University focus on authoritarian personality, mass violence, and the sociology of democracy, indicating a strong institutional presence and ongoing scholarly productivity.
