Luca Caricchi is an Associate Professor of Volcanology and Petrology at the Department of Earth Sciences of the University of Geneva, Switzerland. He has held faculty positions at the university since 2012, initially as Assistant Professor before promotion to Associate Professor in 2017.
Dr. Caricchi completed his academic foundation at the University of Perugia (Italy) and earned his PhD from ETH Zurich (Switzerland) in 2008. His postdoctoral career included research at CNRS in Orleans (France) followed by a NERC postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Bristol (UK).
As a volcanologist and petrologist, Caricchi employs interdisciplinary methods combining geochemistry with statistical approaches to investigate magma generation, transport, and eruption processes. His research group focuses on identifying factors controlling volcanic eruption recurrence rates at regional and global scales, and elucidating mechanisms behind magmatic ore deposit formation. His work spans Volcanology, Petrology, Geochemistry, Physical properties of magmas, Magmatic Ore Deposits, and Volcanic eruptions.
Dr. Caricchi serves as Principal Investigator for research projects funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and previously received an ERC Starting Grant in 2015.
- ERC Starting Grant (2015)
- Young Academy of Europe membership (2018)
He contributes to scholarly communication as associate editor of the Journal of Geophysical Research and leads an active research group at the University of Geneva investigating fundamental processes in volcanic systems.
