Luc Boutsen is a Lecturer in the School of Psychology at Aston University, part of the College of Health and Life Sciences. His research focuses on visual cognition, particularly the neural and cognitive mechanisms underlying face and object perception, attention, and decision-making. He is affiliated with the Cognition & Neuroscience Research Group (CNRG), Research Centre for the Humanities, and Centre for Vision and Hearing Research. Boutsen holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from Université P. Mendes France (1998), an M.Sc. in Cognitive Science from the University of Birmingham (1995), and a B.Sc. in Psychology from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (1993).
His current research projects include studying facial differences in cognitive neuroscience, category-specificity in object recognition, and tool perception. Methodologically, he employs EEG and ERP techniques to investigate event-related potentials and oscillatory brain activity during cognitive tasks. Teaching responsibilities include directing the MSc Psychology (Conversion) program and teaching courses like PY4520 Research Project in Psychology and PY3508 Perceiving People.
Recent publications highlight studies on facial disfigurement effects on attention, covert attention mechanisms, and other-race face processing using ERP analysis. Boutsen actively participates in conferences such as the European Conference on Visual Perception and the Psychonomic Society Annual Meeting, contributing to discussions on visual cognition and perception.
