Louise Tomkow is a Clinician Scientist and Honorary Consultant affiliated with the Division of Population Health, Health Services Research & Primary Care at the University of Manchester. She holds an external position as an ST6 Clinician in Ageing and Complex Medicine at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust. Her work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to good health and well-being, reducing inequalities, and promoting peaceful societies.
Tomkow’s research focuses on healthcare access for marginalized groups, including asylum seekers, refugees, and older adults. She explores ethical challenges in healthcare provision, systemic discrimination, and the intersection of migration policies with health outcomes. Her recent studies examine palliative care inequities for ethnic minorities, language barriers in contingency healthcare settings, and the ethical implications of frailty assessment during pandemics.
Her work has been featured in journals such as the Journal of Medical Ethics and BMJ Open, with a strong emphasis on qualitative methods and policy critique. She is a core member of the Healthy Ageing Research Group (HARG), which investigates aging-related healthcare challenges. Tomkow earned her PhD in 2019 with a thesis on older asylum applicants’ narratives of health in the UK, supervised by Professors Pendleton, Taithe, and Jasani.
Notable projects include analyzing the 'Hostile Healthcare Environment' faced by migrants and studying the moral resilience of healthcare professionals amid the pandemic. Her research bridges clinical practice, public health, and social justice.
